Disrupting Education – Thing 13
I just attended a wonderful and inciteful presentation at the K12 Online Conference 2008. The session was titled Current leadership models are inadequate for disruptive innovations and was hosted by Scott McLeod, an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Educational Administration Program at Iowa State University. For the session, Scott took his information from the books The Innovator’s Dilemma and Disrupting Class by Dr. Clayton Christenson.
Scott discussed “disruptive innovations” and their impact in the business world. He then made the crossover to Education. Scott’s argument is very compelling. If we in the education world do not recognize the disruptive innovations present or coming, we will soon find ourselves irrelevant. Our education system was designed to educate the masses efficiently if not effectively. But in the new digital world, students can educate themselves effectively in areas that they want/need to pursue.
I agree with the argument. Luckily, I work in a district that is already working in this direction. In our High Schools we offer Credit recovery (APEX), Georgia Virtual School and Credit Connect which allow students to work individually toward their academic goals/needs. In the elementary school we use SuccessMaker in both Reading and Math. This program assesses a students level and then allows them to work at their own pace/level to make academic progress. All of these solutions do not replace the teacher but allow the students to work toward their own educational success with their teachers being their facilitators. I feel our district will not be caught unprepared once this paradigm shift hits. But then again, everyone probably feels that way. I guess it’s always good to be looking over your shoulder….or better, to be looking over the next hill.

I agree with your presenter. Public education was designed to educate the masses efficiently, but I love the way technology allows the teacher to individualize for the students in the classroom. And, you are right, Cherokee County is definitely thinking ahead to that goal.
